Empathy In Design

Medical equipment is meant to be highly functional, reliable and safe. Through the pursuit of perfect engineering, many devices have lost empathy in their design, including the handy thermometer. Present day medical thermometers can be invasive and aggressive. TEMPO is an infrared medical thermometer that enables instantaneous contactless thermal diagnosis of the patient using the latest IR technologies and computational algorithms to quickly obtain highly reliable and accurate body temperature measurements. 

I've pursued a unique design that achieves excellent usability, safety with modern aesthetics. By combining the latest tech in contactless medical IR technology, delivered in a compact ergonomic body (for both left-handed and right-handed users) with a cutting edge transparent digital display, we improve the user experience of both medical examiner and patient. Control for the user is intuitive and simple from the start.







Smooth, Seamless & Strong

The design lines flow along a smooth seamless curve that transitions the main body to the clear glass display. Weight is perfectly distributed; engineered to place the center of gravity within the main body (which also doubles as the handle) of the TEMPO, for an almost weightless user experience. The TEMPO's structural housing is made of an injection-molded durable polypropylene (PP) thermoplastic polymer that's strong, flexible, cost-effective and can be recycled. The grey lower half of the housing is over molded with a 2mm smooth textured rubber for enhanced gripping and comfort in the user's hand. Finally, the body is coupled to a nano-coated reinforced tempered clear glass OLED display for excellent viewing angles and crisp colors. 

The form is pure and simple, yet highly engineered. 






Clear, Quick User Interface

By utilizing a capacitive touch interface, a gentle touch on the well-placed embossed fingerprint symbol initiates a measurement and activates the IR lasers. Measurements are made instantaneously continuously and are processed internally by the TEMPO until it emits an audible cue through the built-in speaker to indicate to the user that an accurate, reliable measurement has been obtained. Users can swipe their fingers toward the glass display to cycle between Celsius and Fahrenheit units. In addition, the built-in accelerometer automatically flips the display to accommodate both left-handed and right-handed users.

The color of the numeric display changes proportionally from green to red with respect to the severity of the reading.






Accurate, Reliable 

With TEMPO, taking accurate measurements is clear and easy. Clever mechanical engineering design positions the lasers at a precise angle to taper the IR beams to a single red dot on the surface body at a range of 40 mm; this point will yield most accurate temperature measurements. By using triangulation of three lasers, more thermal data can be collected and compared; thus achieving superior accuracy and precision in comparison to existing IR surface-based thermometers.

TEMPO's design is based on the universal design philosophy that 'a product should be used easily by everyone'. The TEMPO is an exploration of potential future medical devices focused on human-centered design, where carefully touched ergonomic lines and curves neatly complement the precise technology at the heart of the product.
