Climate-Smart Agriculture Boosts Soil Health, Reduces

Agriculture industry executive Carl Casale is the former CEO of CHS, Inc., a leading global agribusiness owned by farmers, ranchers, and cooperatives across the United States. After his time at the Fortune 100 company, Carl Casale was appointed to the board of Syngenta.

Syngenta is committed to promoting sustainable soil practices among farmers, thereby helping them save more farmland and reduce carbon emissions. Farming does impact climate change negatively. When farmers unnecessarily disturb the soil, a lot of the carbon that was held by the soil is released into the atmosphere. In fact, about 22 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions come from the entire agriculture value chain.

Syngenta is promoting climate-smart agriculture as a way to reduce soil disturbance and greenhouse gas emissions. One of the beneficiaries of this project is Pablo Rodriguez, a sixth-generation farmer from Cholula, Mexico.

Mr. Rodriguez adopted climate-smart measures to improve soil health like minimizing tillage and leaving crop residues on the soil surface. He also began rotating his crops with sorghum and hybrid corn, providing permanent cover to soil and protecting it from erosion caused by rain and wind. Since he began these practices some years ago, Mr. Rodriguez has doubled his yield to almost seven tons a hectare. He has also noticed more earthworms in the soil, which is an indicator of soil health.
