Europan 10 - Warsaw: Competition Winning Entry
Europan 10 - Warsaw
'Ambient Kerb' - Competition Winning Entry
produced in collaboration with MMASA Arquitectos, La Coruna, Spain
(2009)
The intervention against the process of gentrification and resultant community dissolution was the crux of the Europan 10 Competition brief.  The primary action of the proposal is a programmatic strategy focused on securing the public space as a site of interaction for all residents, making development in the area dependant on an inclusive street-life.  By providing the right ‘ambient’ conditions for occupation, rather than pre-prescribing the program itself, the proposal seeks to encourage users to appropriate certain areas of public space based on their own needs and desires.  As a means for providing the tools for this appropriation the proposal centres on the insertion of a secondary ‘kerb’ into the Wilenska Street environs: providing both spatial and social connectivity between individual points of vital programmatic public activity.
