12 pictures - 12 haiku - 12 questions

about hermits, vanitas and happiness

For many decades my two preferred techniques have been body painting photography and East Asian ink painting. Recently I have been stylistically combining these two techniques. From time to time I post experiences and thoughts on topics that are currently relevant to me on Facebook under #vomfrudashaiku.. In this way I created the 12 pictures with the verses, especially during the months of the shutdown in March and April. They all relate to my very personal everyday life and to media reports. At the end, comments on the pictures were created, as it were in a dialogue with the pictures, the current world events and the reporting on them.

The question about oracles and the signs of the time

The bad news

At the beginning of the year many people tend to think about the future, also in the form of various oracles. With the oracle, a higher authority is called to say something on important questions of decision. However, in most cases, only pleasant sayings of the oracle are taken note of.

Actually, the oracle of the astrologers would not have been necessary at all. The bad news from China was known already at the beginning of the year. But it was just „Chinese“ and therefore not understood. For a long time, the fact that an epidemic was spreading was stubbornly ignored and nobody in the Western world wanted to believe that the disease could also affect him. As in earlier times, the bearers of the bad news were blackened or silenced. Apollo is said to have turned the white bird that told him about the infidelity of his Coronis into a black crow as a punishment. It is nowadays called Corvus corone. For about 5000 years people have been practicing the reading of oracles, first in China, by the way. When will they learn to interpret the oracles and signs correctly?

The question of faith

Have you thought about dying and do you have a living will? When a threat like the coronavirus comes close, these questions become urgent. Also the question of what comes after death is probably being asked more often currently, as if death was our constant companion only lately.

Carlos Castaneda writes in „Journey to Ixtlan“ and „The Wheel of Time“ that death is our eternal companion and wise advisor. Whenever destruction threatens, we can ask him if this is really the case and then realize that we are wrong.

The Church Father Hieronimus is often depicted with a skull to which he points with his finger. He is the author of the Latin translation of the Bible, the Vulgate, and he had a formative influence on the theology and faith of the Christian Church. In a vision he is flogged by a heavenly judge because of his secular attitude. Punishments in the hereafter for transgressions in this world are certainly a major cause of the fear of death. With this fear the church has successfully pursued power politics. How formative and absurd religious beliefs are, we primarily see with others, with our enemies, the Islamists, who are guaranteed to go to heaven after the suicide bombing, with virgins for their amusement.

It is a question of faith (the conviction in thinking of something you cannot experience) what comes after death that decides whether you are ready for it.
