Solar Gravure
Solar Gravure is a method of producing a printing plate for fine art print editions. The process of creating the plate involves UV exposure of a steel sheet coated with photosensitive polymer that is masked with a hand-drawn transparency (ebony pencil on mylar). It is not unlike exposing emulsion-coated screens for screen printing. The resulting plate, however, is more like an etched copper plate, and it is printed with the ink-and-wipe intaglio print method. The quality of the line and delicacy of gradients are remarkably true to that of pencil drawings on paper. In 2010, I created five plates and printed an edition of 20 to fully explore the process.
