Sultry Rooftops: Natal, Brazil (Part One)

I went to the city of Natal in Rio Grande Do Norte, Brazil for two weeks in November of 2019 on a volunteer trip with the non-profit organization The Partners of Americas. Gracious enough to have me, I had the opportunity to live alongside the vibrant community. I can still remember those warms nights when the distant echo of bossa nova music would cross my window as I fell asleep.

I shot everything with my Minolta X-700 on both FUJIFILM Superia X-TRA 400, and Kodak Portra 400 35mm color film.
This was shot from my bedroom window. I was staying with a Brazilian filmmaker and his eighty year-old mother at the time. I remember asking her if she's ever seen the snow, and with no reluctance said, "Nunca," ("never"). That night I stood at my bedroom window, eyes closed, imagining the breeze as if it were the consuming glow of a winter storm.
Everywhere you go in Natal, there's barbed wire that covers the top of every wall. This is the direct result of the fragile political climate in Brazil.
