The Utah Arts Festival is an award-winning weekend-long event that includes workshops, exhibitions, film screenings, and music by diverse artists from around the country. The Portland Cello Project is a headliner this year, bringing their classical instruments and their wild reinterpretions of pop hits to the Mormon Capital of the World.
In creating a poster to promote PCP’s performance at the festival, I noticed that the various mahogany and tan hues that cover a cello’s body closely resemble the colors found in the red rock landscapes of Utah. I decided to play with the idea of “painting the town red,” as such, using the color relationship of the two subjects involved. As well, I juxtaposed a highly detailed vector rendering with a pen-and-paper line drawing, to illustrate the idea of various art forms uniting at the festival.
