Brick Residential
The goal of this personal project was to get myself more comfortable with RailClone and practice doing photomontages. This is a fictitious, high-end residential building in the center of Niš, Serbia.
PROCESS

The Bricks

I wanted to create RailClone bricks in several patterns for this project. After some design experimentations, I settled on the 3 patterns you see below. The RailClone objects could probably be more efficient, but I’m happy with the overall result.
Due to the limitations of RailClone Lite, I could only use 3 segments (or 3 unique bricks) per RailClone object, which was challenging at first, because I didn’t want to see repeating bricks on the building. The workaround was to use transform nodes in RailClone to rotate each segment several times in 90 degree increments. This way I could get 4 unique sides from each brick, and ultimately get 12 unique looking bricks instead of 3. Using procedural and triplanar texturing techniques helped out even further to get a more random, natural look.
I created the bricks in ZBrush using the stylized rock alphas by Jonas Ronnegard. I made sure each side of the brick is unique, while also not having any very distinctive features so that all the bricks would blend in nicely in the surface of the wall.
