Emergence in Creativity — an interactive narrative
Emergence in Creativity explores and experiments with the medium of interactive storytelling, through a re-interpretation of an excerpt from Steven Johnson’s book, Emergence: The Connected Lives of Ants, Brains, Cities, and Software.
Contemporary affordances in creative coding practices and digital media have introduced an alternate mode of storytelling that takes advantage of a multimedia platform. Through an interdisciplinary integration of typography, image, motion graphics, audio, and interaction design, these hybrid novels create relationships between stories and readers that surpass the boundaries of physical mediums. The exploratory and responsive nature of interactive storytelling creates a uniquely immersive and engaging narrative experience.

In response to Johnson's concept of emergence, this project is loosely inspired by an accumulation of art movements (cubism, expressionism, surrealism, pop art, and contemporary art), that gradually increase the visual complexity of the interactive narrative. The design explores how ‘emergence’ can be communicated through the dynamic possibilities of creative code to enhance the an audience's engagement with the concept. It seeks to extrapolate the physical medium of books into innovative possibilities that allow the narrative experience to be more immersive and exploratory
