Government Boys
These pictures were all taken in a government home (orphanage) in Bangalore. These are just a few of the roughly 60 boys who lived here. A number of them have mental health problems which is usually why they are put in here by their families and the ones that don't will often develop problems as a result of living in this place. The home itself is disgustingly dirty and smells awful (as do the boys). The boys all sleep on the floor together in a large dark room and spend most of the days just sitting out in the hot sun on the concrete with nothing to do.

I went there with an organisation who go into the home once a week (or more) to hang out and play with the boys and to try and make their lives a little bit better. They clean the home and the boys (not a nice job!), they have painted murals on the walls and most importantly they play games and give the boys the attention they desperately need.

Most of the boys I photographed were very excited about it and a few kept trying to come back and have more photos taken. It is quite a heartbreaking place and it would have been easy to make  photographs that reflect this. However I wanted to try show them as individuals and not just as another person living in poverty.
