With 468 stations in operation, the New York City Subway is the most extensive public transportations system in the world by number of stations. It is owned by the City of New York. 1.65 billion rides were made in 2012. The New York City Subway is the seventh busiest rapid transit rail system in the world.

There are stations located in all five boroughs of New York City (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and the Bronx), while there is no direct connection to the rail in Staten Island.
