Informing America Project

The Informing America Project is a challenge where the designer is charged with picking a social issue, illustrating charts and graphs based on reliable data they find while doing research on the topic, and then creating a mini-site that presents all of the data in an unbiased way.

The topic I selected was pornography — a sensitive and controversial subject for many, but an important one to discuss.

The question posed to the reader right at the beginning is this: do you believe that pornography is bad? Is it a healthy outlet, or a scourge on society? We begin by weighing some pros and cons, and then start to get into some of the science of how pornography can affect your head, your health, and your heart.
On subsequent pages, we learn lots of rather sobering statistics about pornography use, including how many people view it per day, who views it, and what the long-term effects are of consistent viewership.

On the last page, the viewer is invited to evaluate their opinions and determine their feelings about the subject — and then take action if they feel strongly.

The goal of the design work here was to juxtapose dark and light; I chose to keep the background and overall vibe of the site dark, but then used bright colors to display the information. I also added some grungy tops and bottoms to the stat panels to give it a more edgy feel.

Here are the full pages, in the order they appear on the mini-site:
I hope you enjoyed looking through this project!
