Gyeott — Life Assistant for Refugees in Korea
*Gyeott(곁) means someone's side in Korean.
해마다 약 2,000만명의 난민이 발생해 세계를 떠돌아다닙니다. 난민인정률이 높지 않은 한국에서도 연간 1만명 이상의 난민들이 난민인정심사를 받습니다. 난민은 기본적으로 자의와 무관하게 자국에서 밀려나왔기 때문에, 향후 정착지에서 사용할 언어에 대비되지 않았을 가능성이 매우 큽니다. 한국과 같이 흔치 않은 언어를 사용하지 않는 국가에서는 더더욱 그렇죠.
게다가 완전히 새로운 사회 환경에서 일어서야 하는 난민들은 많은 생활과 관련된 정보를 필요로 하는데, 언어의 장벽에 부딪힌다는 것은 생존에 어려움을 겪는다는 말과 다르지 않습니다. 이들에게는 당장 해결하기 어려운 언어의 장벽을 넘어, 심리적으로 의지할 수 있고 실질적인 도움을 받을 수 있는 친구가 필요합니다. ‘곁Gyeott’은 한국에 사는 난민들을 위한 라이프 어시스턴트 서비스입니다.
About 20 million refugees are reported each year. In Korea, where the refugee recognition rate is not high, more than 10,000 refugees follow refugee recognition procedure annually. Since refugees have been pushed out of their country regardless of their will, it is highly likely that they are not prepared for the language. Even more so in countries that speak unusual languages like Korea.
In addition, refugees who have to survive in a completely new environment need a lot of life-related information. For them, the inability of language means a threat to their survival. They need friends who can rely on psychologically and get real help beyond language problems that are difficult to solve right away. ‘Gyeott' is a life assistance service for refugees living in Korea.
