Leisure Park and Educational Centre with the Hydro-Botanical Wastewater Treatment Plant
More than half of the Polish rivers are in an unsatisfactory sanitary condition. Szczecin is one of the cities that had caused one of the vastest pollutions
of the Polish rivers with domestic wastewater. The city is planning on developing the islands in the upcoming years. The solution for the dire situation of the rivers is to cease any dumping of the untreated wastewater and to introduce necessary preventive measures. It is vital to promote the awareness that the sewage comprises organic substances, which cause eutrophication, along with the toxic waste that can cause numerous diseases, ranging from allergies to cancer. The outcome of the conducted analysis is the design of the Leisure Park and Educational Centre with the Hydro-Botanical Wastewater Treatment Plant on the Wyspa Zielona in Szczecin. It fits into the masterplan of the winning design in architectural competition. The idea behind the Leisure Park is inspired by the original romantic gardens. The axial dispersion of the buildings along with the network of winding alleyways and the eclectic sets of facilities formulate an oasis of amusement amongst high housings. The plants inside the glasshouse are active throughout the year and treat the wastewater for 40,000 residents on the islands. From the left to the right bank of the river, the water pumped through is purified by the macrophytes.A multi-functional hall is a facility comprising cold storage for fresh fish and seafood. In this building one can also find a carpenter’s workshop and offices for the professionals who promote and organise concerts and festivals. There is also a space for food-trucks and various market stalls. The hall’s purpose can be altered according to the city’s needs. The park and the treatment plant are a milestone in the rescue mission of Odra river but also a way of eco-education.
