Providing youth with opportunities for leadership roles and development are key ways to increase engagement. Adult role models, such as educators and school administrators, can nurture young people by validating their strengths and giving clear and actionable feedback that will help them grow as leaders.

In the school setting, leadership roles on committees or projects should be set-aside specifically for young people. This increases ownership in the school community as well as offering real-world opportunities to problem-solve and make decisions. Since some youth may believe leadership skills are something innate, educators should help all students recognize their potential and encourage them to take on leadership positions.
