GOODNIGHT MISTER TOM

Goodnight Mister Tom
“Good night, Mister Tom,” Willie whispered. He listened to the door downstairs close and slipped out of bed to look through the window. A crack of lightning lit up the whole sky. Tom paused for an instant. “And you’d best call me Tom. Good night and God bless.” And with that he descended from view, closing the trapdoor behind him. This section of the book inspired me to create my cover. William says to Tom “Goodnight Mister Tom” once in the book. It is an iconic part because the book’s name is also inspired by this part. Therefore, I decided to create a design which represents the feelings of this section.
In order to do that, I used the crescent moon and stars on the background. This gives the feeling of the night. I also used 2 different silhouettes on the to represent Tom and William. Warplanes on the moon reflect World War II time in the book. I placed them exactly on the eye level of the silhouette. This makes it looks like closed eyes. I also illustrated cycling child silhouette on the back cover. This represents the ending of the book when William riding the bicycle.

Initial thoughts and developments

My initial idea was illustrating Tom and William. I thought illustrations would take children’s attention. However, I gave up on this idea because it wasn’t engaging audiences enough. Therefore, I decided to focus on a graphic-based design. I took a side face picture of myself and my friend to create silhouettes and applied them on my cover design as a crescent moon.
Audiences of Goodnight Mister Tom is childeren. Therefore, I used brush pen to create this informal type and found other title’s typeface to make it looks like childish and engage young age people.

Loyalty card, post stamp stickers and Website
I designed a loyalty card for my promotional item. When people buy Goodnight Mister Tom, they may have this card free. This will lead to remind Goodnight Mister Tom and promote to other people when audiences use it.
The reason I designed post stamp stickers is to make a connection with the book. William sends letters to his mother and Tom sends letters to William to hear from him. Due to the conditions of the period, the letter and post stamps are often used in the book.I kept my cover design concept for web design. This helps audiences to understand the link with the rest of work I created.
