REAL is a female empowerment magazine aimed at Namibian girls 10 - 18 years of age. Written by working Namibian and American female authors and a group of young female aspiring writers, REAL is distributed throughout Namibia and funded by a grant from UNICEF.
We designed the style and layout of REAL magazine to follow a budget that was extremely tight, (there was no money to hire a photographer nor to purchase images for placement throughout the length of the grant). It needed to catch the eye of early to late teen girls and be easily handed off to the Namibian graphic designer for future issues. Bright colors and strong graphic silhouettes take center stage, while photos of the young authors were shot by a friend.
