Free Safety-Providing Last Line of Defense on Gridiron

Bryan Specht is an established presence in the digital marketing sphere who guides Olson Engage and focuses on strategic communications solutions. An avid football fan, Bryan Specht played free safety at Ohio University and West Virginia State University, and gained experience coaching at both institutions.

Providing the secondary’s last line of defense, the safety retains the deepest position from the line of scrimmage on any play and is tasked with watching as the play develops before taking action.

The initial read made by the safety is whether the emerging play involves a run or pass. If it's a running play, he heads downhill toward the line, while a pass play sends him backpedalling to the deepest receiver. This is often accomplished through a "high-hat, low-hat" read, as to whether the linemen are standing up or staying low to block the offense.

Acting as “quarterback of the defense,” the safety also reads formations and actively communicates with other members of the teams in ways that position them to best take down runners and break up passes.

Because of the variety of plays in which the free safety is involved, he requires a "jack of all trades" skill set that includes quickness, size, and tackling ability, while also being able to quickly analyze evolving situations and make the proper read.
