조선, 모자의 나라 | Joseon, The Nation of Hats

어느 주말, 모르는 버스를 타고 낯선 동네에 내려 정해진 목적지 없이 헤매다가 허름한 미술관 앞에 놓인 불상을 발견해 홀린 듯 다가갔다. 전혀 관리되지 않은 듯 먼지가 가득했고, 이리저리 흠집이 난 상태였다. 문 닫은 가게 앞에 볼품없는 모습으로 덩그러니 놓여있는 조각상은 마치 잊힌것처럼 처량하게 보였다.

One weekend, I got off on a bus that I didn't know and wandered into a strange neighborhood without a set destination before finding a Buddha statue in front of the art museum, and came in a bewitching way. out of control at all. It was full of dust and scratches all around. Standing shabby in front of a closed shop, the statue looked as if it had been forgotten.

나는 불상이 착용한 화관의 모양을 통해 관세음보살이라는 것을 알 수 있었다. 모자는 착용자의 신분을 나타내며, 정체성을 표현하는 기호성을 가지고 있다. 이러한 맥락은 현재에는 많이 사라졌지만, '모자의 나라'라고 불리우던 시기, 과거 조선시대에는 착용자의 신분이나, 어떠한 장소에서, 무슨 상황에 착용하는 모자인지까지도 유추할 수 있었다. 이처럼 과거에는 당연하게 여겨졌지만 지금은 그렇지 않은, 잊혀가는 것에 대해 생각해보았다.

I could tell from the shape of a wreath worn by the Buddhist statue that it's identity was a avalokiteśvara. The hat represents the wearer's identity and has a symbolism that expresses identity. This context has disappeared a lot now, but Korea was called the 'Nation of Hats' before. In the Joseon Dynasty, we could even infer the identity of the wearer, the location and the situation from their hat. It was taken for granted in the past. Through this weekend experience, I have thought about 'forgotten things,' which were taken for granted in the past but are not now.

이 책에는 조선시대의 모자에 관한 내용뿐 아니라, 지금은 사용되지 않는 텍스트 이모티콘에 대한 내용이 담겨있다.

상단에 위치한 책은 조선시대의 모자들이 신분 및 상황, 목적에 따라 달리 쓰이는 모습을 이미지와 함께 편집하였다. 그리고 하단에 위치한 책은 화려한 그림과 AR 기술이 도입되어 현대화된 기술로 대체되어 사라져가는, 잊혀가는 이 텍스트 이모티콘의 역사와 해설이 담겨있다.

두 권의 책은 따로 존재하지만 동시에 같이 읽을 수 있다. 이 두권이자 한권인 책은 기호성에 대해 이야기한다.

The book not only talks about hats from the Joseon Dynasty, but also about text emoticons that are not currently in use.

The book, located at the top, edited storys and images of Joseon-era hats being used differently depending on their identity, situation and purpose. And the book, located at the bottom, contains the history and commentary of this forgotten text emoticon, which is being replaced by modernized technology with colorful painting and AR technology.

The two books exist separately but can be read together at the same time. These two and one book talk about symbol and semiotics.
