Colorado Train Map

The goal of this little personal project was to communicate a vision for what travel could look like between the Denver area and the local mountains. With a maximum of one train transfer, riders would be able to get to any local resort in about half the time of driving.

Visually this map is an abstraction aimed to quickly communicate possible routes. The logic of the map is premised on 4 tunnels that establish direct routes between popular destinations.

Over 13 million people travel these routes in cars and trucks to access summer hiking and winter ski resorts. If the 3 million people living in the Denver area each paid about $150 per year we could support construction costs of the train (amortized over 30 years). This is a rough extrapolation based on the cost of the tunnel between Zurich and Milan and ignores avoided costs resulting from time spent in traffic, hundreds of car crashes and the stress associated with driving icy roads.
