Performance Artists
A talented group of people from the lower east side of Manhattan
Not long after I moved to NYC I became involved in a underground performance art space called Gusto House. It started out with some drunk, stoned kids who fell into a really cool space and had their friends perform in a formal fashion. It cost the performers nothing to perform and they even took home a percentage of the door money, so with this "business plan," some dumb luck and the least sober managers leaving the space became a fixture of the east village performance art scene. Upon the more sober managers taking charge I happened to fall into becoming part of the space myself and so began my association with the performance art scene in NYC. The best association in relating the space to today's world is the Blue Man Group performed their now infamous original piece first at the Gusto House - I still have some spots of paint on some of my photo equipment from that night. I never was able to schedule the Blue Man Group to sit for me for a portrait but I was able to have the honour of many talented performers giving their valued time in my attempt to capture them in one static moment to tell who they are and what they do.
