Publication - Message In A Bottle

Brief
In this brief we were required to design a publication for one of Jeanette Winterson’s short story.Constraints to this project was that we were not allowed to change the copy of the story. A chosen design movement had to be used as inspiration for the style and layout. The publication could be typographic, photographic or illustrative based.
Message In A Bottle
The story I chose is “Message in a bottle” it is a story that is based on the idea of love and destination. The story is about a woman who wishes to get home to her husband even after police officers warns her about the danger on the road ahead.Winterson explains the woman’s journey through heavy connotations of water. Winterson uses a lot figurative language to describe the situations the woman is put through to make it is easier for the reader. The writer kept emphasizing how the woman desperately wants to get home. Towards the end she goes back to the idea of message in a bottle and how the floods may have destroyed everything, but something always finds its way back to start all
over again.

Concept
My concept was based on love within the short story. I have decided to go with the Romanticism movement as my inspiration. The artists during this movement emphasized that sense and emotions were equally important as means of understanding and experiencing the world. Romanticism celebrated the individual imagination. My Publication focused on typographic play with quotes that I pulled from the story. The layout of the text was simple and clean and I took inspiration from old books made in the 1800 to help me develop it. The typeface Garamond was used throughout the entire publication.
Colour Palette
I got inspiration for my colour palette looking at old love letter. I chose the Gold colour because it gives a warm feeling when one thinks of love.
