The Fossil Free Crib - Vattenfall
PROJECT BRIEF: DESIGN AND PRODUCE A BABY CRIB WITHOUT THE USE OF ANY FOSSIL FUELS
During my internship at FROLIC studio I was fully involved in this project, where we teamed up with DDB Unlimited and Fiction Factory on a project to design and build a crib that avoided fossil fuels at every stage of the production process. It was a challenge in traceability that involved dissecting and taking a close look at every part of the supply chain.
The constraints of the materials led to a carefully considered design. Without the option to use metal fasteners or synthetic glues, our design used wood joinery techniques and natural glue to uphold the integrity of the crib.
We put just as much care into the aesthetic. Striking a delicate balance between a handmade and modern industrial feel, the lightly coloured ash and visual lightness of the frame give a nod to the Scandinavian design of Vattenfall’s home and invoked the calming atmosphere of a child’s bedroom. This was enhanced by applying soft, round detailing using CNC (computer numerical control) technology.
The crib stands as a symbol of the next generation living in a world in which fossil free is the standard. And after all that effort, we’re proud to say that the first baby to lay in it fell asleep within minutes.
