FUNDIDORA
Typography

Compañía Fundidora de Fierro y Acero de Monterrey, S.A., was founded in 1900, a blast furnace steelmaking company in the city of Monterrey, in northern Mexico. During the prelude of the 20th century, grotesque and sans serifs typefaces were blooming, a direct reflection of this industrial modernity.

After producing one million tons of steel, the steelmaker Fundidora, the largest of its kind in Latin America, closed operations in 1986. On their old perimeters, Parque Fundidora was born as a cultural and commercial project in 2001. It extends over 144 hectares and has an annual flow of 8,000,000 people.

In 2010, Ariel Di Lisio was teaching at the Centro de Estudios Superiores de Diseño de Monterrey, CEDIM, where Aldo Arillo studied Graphic Design and together developed a project for Parque Fundidora. The relationship evolved through ten years into the partnership behind the Nodo Type Foundry.

One of the angular aspects of Nodo Type Foundry, is to build a dialogue between typography and local contexts. The factory is a symbol of the industrial character of Monterrey; and the term «foundry» is meaningful for both the steel industrial landscape of the city, and the typography world.

We are back to the Fundidora park,
We are back to the Foundry.
