Welcome to the Mariners’ House of Montreal!

Welcome to the Mariners ’House of Montreal!
On June 3, 2018, I went to the public opening of the Port of Montreal's Grand Quay. Exceptionally, as part of the festivities, the Mariners' House had opened its doors to the public.
On this day, 13,000 people* visited the new facilities of this magnificent site, both inside and outside, to welcome cruise ships and the many tourists who visit the city.

The Mariners' House

In 1875, the Montreal Sailors' Institute was located at 165 Place d'Youville. Their purpose is to serve the merchant marine sailors calling at Montreal.

In 1954, a new building was inaugurated in the same place. They had access to lounges and games rooms, a chapel, a concert hall, left luggage, a post office, currency exchange, a barber shop and doctor’s office, not to mention a cafeteria and beds. In 1968, the Montreal Sailors’ Institute merged with the Catholic Sailors’ Club to create the Mariners' House.

The Pointe-à-Callière Museum bought the building and on March 8, 2013, the museum's fifth pavilion was inaugurated and was named the Mariners's House.

The Mariners' House of Montreal is currently located at 200 rue de la Commune Ouest, right next to the Port of Montreal's Grand Quay. Their mission remains for the material, social, and spiritual welfare of seafarers temporarily in the Port of Montreal.
With the Covid-19, the place is currently closed.

June 3, 2018, I alternated taking my black & white and color photos.
Soon, I will make a compilation of my best photos of the Port of Montreal's Grand Quay.

Good viewing!
On a wall, banknotes from around the world are pinned by sailors and officers in memory of their visits to the Sailors' House. Some of them add a photo or a few words. It touched me a lot to see this kind recognition from them.
