Experiencing Siem Reap

CAMBODIA • DAY 1
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Fresh off the plane in foreign twilight, the tour guide told us stories of the country & its people.
With each word that struck, a prominent few infinitely echoed in the back of my mind.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As an outsider, I had my best interest at heart to learn their ways & hear their stories;
beyond the pretty hotels & fancy cafés that seemed to have engulfed the city.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Nighttime came around & we were determined to scavenge for food.
Not even unfamiliarity with the streets could stop us.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Everything felt different, but exciting. as the day drew to an end it was time to rest,
& we would find out what cambodia has to offer in due time.
CAMBODIA • DAY 2
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3am the alarm goes off. my roommate, Roro, & I scramble to
the dimly lit hallways in order to catch our ride to Angkor Wat.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Pitch black is the only way to describe our journey from then on.
There was no way to tell, no inkling whatsoever, of what our surroundings were.
Despite not being able to see my own hands in front of my face,
I trotted on with the little light that came from mobile phones around me.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We finally found a spot to park ourselves & wait for the sunrise, but then - it started raining.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We watched as the sky go from black to blue to a strange grey, & finally a gradient
that could be identified as a sunrise. Seeing the temple silhouetted in it all,
I suddenly forgot about said morning's antiques.
CAMBODIA • DAY 3
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This day in particular caught me in a constant spiral of awe.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Ta Prohm was glistening in residual rain.
Moss & trees were claiming their territory, in the most graceful way.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
6 months of scrutinizing & sketching temples from a
computer screen is completely disparate from being there myself.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To top it all off: the Bambu Stage.
It changed my entire perspective on things I've been theorizing,
& Nick Coffill flawlessly translated each piece of information with a performance.
CAMBODIA • DAY 4
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Our first stop that day was Banteay Srei, the oldest temple in Cambodia,
which opened in 967 AD, & was made with beautiful pink sandstone.
The carvings were surprisingly still intact & as sharp as it would have looked if newly built.
⠀⠀⠀⠀
After, came an expedition of hikes & heights, as we ventured onto Kbal Spean to witness
more carvings
in the riverbeds and waterfalls there. the water up top was impossibly cold, but rewarding after a long ass climb!

CAMBODIA • DAY 5
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This was our last day in Cambodia, it was a short one, but it was good nonetheless.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I'm so glad & deeply thankful for an opportunity to experience Cambodia's culture even
if it was just for a little bit, especially with the best tour guides anyone could ask for.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Alongside that, meeting such amazing, inspiring & genuine artists from different parts
of the world with varying backgrounds & walks of life.  Truly, everyone has been so lovely.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I cherish every connection i make on my journeys; being able to connect with
the people on this trip in such a short span of time warms my heart.
