Concept / Story - Michael Dougherty's 2007 horror film Trick 'r Treat is a popular Halloween classic. It's an anthology film with 4 separate stories that are all threaded together by one common element, Sam. Sam is a demon/god-like character that punishes those who break the traditions/rules of Halloween. He visits one town a year to watch over it to keep the Halloween Spirit alive. He is completely harmless to those who follow the ancient traditions, and without ruining the movie for those who haven't seen it, those who do not follow them have a very rude and deadly awakening.
Halloween is easily my favorite holiday as it is also my birthday, therefore making a project based on my favorite Halloween film was something I had to do. Sam's character depicts a harmless trick-r-treated. He wears orange footy pajamas with a burlap sack over his head, depicting a simple jack-o-lantern. His costume makes him look innocent whilst still having a dark and eerie vibe to it, without really knowing what lies beneath the unassumingly child just seeking candy on Halloween night.
I wanted to try and maintain his innocent yet unsettling look, so getting the costume almost exact to the original was something I really strove for. My hope was that any fan of the movie could easily recognize him from my artwork. My depiction of Sam is of him sitting on a bent open cemetery fence right off the trail of a lit path. He sits surrounded by trees with the autumn colored leaves falling down, lit jack-o-lanterns sitting all around him. While being under a blood moon with bats flying high in the sky. I tried to incorporate small elements/details from the film to tie it all together better. From the jack-o-lantern depicting Sam that catches fire is the same as in Mr. Kreeg's house, the blood moon in the sky while the pack of werewolves transform, and his iconic jack-o-lantern lollipop that has a darker use than just candy..
