The client was inspired by the covers of The Invisible Life of Euridice Gusmao by Martha Batalha and Polite Society by Manesh Rao. The client also made personal sketches for my consideration. 

Based on the client's inspiration, I proceeded to create a series of mood boards and my own sketches for feedback. I made sure to centrally feature a woman oftentimes in a whimsical and abstract manner. 

Key feedback was for the cover design to be less abstract and include more action. The client provided these sketches for the next direction to take, which also was to include some of these elements: a professional woman, a work environment, bubble tea, and a sculpture that is referenced in the novel.
