Address Magazine

Address magazine is a fictional 35-page magazine that I wrote and designed.

This publication was given the name, Address, for two reasons. The first reason is an address refers to where a place belongs in the world. They speak to where we live, work, and play. Often, the first address we learn is our home. Further, an address is part of a system. While some of us can choose where we live, we cannot choose our address: the streets, numbering systems, and land codes are all part of a larger system of a municipality, region, or country. An address describes both the place and how it relates to its larger community.

The second reason that we decided to call this publication Address is because it addresses the existence and impact of some of the world’s most substantial problems. These problems cannot be ignored: they need our attention, they demand our attention. While we do not claim to solve world hunger or access to fresh water, our goal is to bring attention to these issues both at both a global level and at a local level, in our very own city of Calgary. Our hope is that after reading this, you will feel compelled to address them yourself.

This issue contains an update on each of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the reason why they are wicked problems, and what those problems look like on both a global and local context.

The feature article is on the topic of urban sprawl. The feature answers the question, how might we develop and maintain housing, energy, and transportation infrastructure in a sustainable way? It considers issues such as power and privilege, the state of existing infrastructures, population changes and growth, land annexation, flows of financial resources, policy design, and urban community design. The article is an overall comment on how politics and technology affect human behaviours, and seeks to surface urban sprawl as an issue that challenges our health, sense of community, and environmental sustainability.
