MEMEFEST 2019
After the succes of the first edition, the CCCB Museum in Barcelona held the event again in 2019. I was so happy when they asked me to create the image for the 2019 edition of the festival as well (you can check the 2018 design here). The design follows the vibe from the previous one: it has to be funny, connect with the audience and be a bit sassy.
INSPIRATION
During the first edition I focused on popular memes, but this time I wanted to make a tribute to what's behind that: the anonymous people who create this content without expecting to be recognised for it. Real heroes, if you ask to me :) So the idea to create a heroes and heroines gang came to me. With their DIY costumes and tools. I always liked the Japanese sci-fi cosplays and poses, so I mixed it with the concept.
After some tests, the gang was done and dusted.
Let me introduce them: The MemeWarriors.
GRAPHIC SYSTEM
When thinking about the final artwork, it was really important for me to create something that's adaptable to different sizes or media, but without losing the general concept.
To keep this homogenous look, I created several patterns (as support graphics), a limited color palette and a customized brush.
FINAL ARTWORK
To complete the final composition, I added some references to digital culture: burning phones, famous memes, keyboards... All together in this modular composition, a kind of puzzle that makes easier to change it.
ADAPTATIONS
The design had several adaptations: postals, banners, Instagram stories, etc. Some of them were created thinking about the audience. For example, this print as a voting system or loads of stickers for everyone!
And of course, and maybe the most epic adaptation, is the festival itself: all the screens, the tables, bar decoration, atrezzo. A huge and fantastic job from the whole team.
