Kowboy Poker Magazine

In this project, I created the concept for a new magazine including a logo, cover, table of contents, and a six page feature article. In poker, kings are sometimes called cowboys, which was my concept for the title of the magazine, Kowboy Poker.

For my logo, my concept was to create a king as seen on playing cards and put sunglasses on him since sunglasses are commonly worn during poker games to prevent giving tells to other players.  I put the text “Kowboy Poker” in the space his crown would be located and put the text “magazine” in the strip that separates the crown from the head.

My theme for the table of contents was to create a Las Vegas Strip using the signs and buildings to create a hierarchy to divide the different sections of the magazine.  For the feature columns, I used the head of a king card as bullets. One of the kings faces right while the other three face left, so I used the one that faces right as the bullet for the feature article that is displayed in the image on the cover.

For the feature article spread, I used an interview with “The Unabomber” Phil Laak. Phil Laak is known for his unorthodox style of play and his entertaining personality.  For the “cover” spread of the interview, I took some of the focal points discussed in the interview and placed them inside of his head.
