Expand Your Box
In Collaboration with Janke Du Toit. The aim of this project is to effectively and engagingly communicate the personality of the Graphic Design Course of the NWU aka House of the Rising Sun through a digital based visual identity.

Our logo is created out of the letters F2 that is formed by basic squares these letters where horizontally flipped and added next to the original letters. The outcome created an abstract face-like image which we used as basis for our look and feel that is created out of bold colors and different faces made of basic shapes each to represent another leg of our diverse faculty.

The overall concept of our project is to expand your box. As a graphic designer you no longer think inside the box and thinking outside the box is too vague. That’s where our concept comes in by expanding your box - be it rules, guides, design principles, you are still thinking in your box by using the knowledge that you learned while knowing that you can expand your box it need not be a small narrow minded box.

This resulted in our design that is built out of squares (boxes) that form faces and the colorful background and patterns represent the creative thinking going on in a graphic designer’s head.

In our Logo build the video is specifically talking to our target market the prospective students by using words like you and and using certain characteristics of the target market /design persona. Phrases like the coffee addict, the creative one, the problem solver which immediately include a certain group of students.

The characters we created are all based on basic shapes mainly square (box-like)
shapes. And these faces can all break up in to different seperate squares that shape
something new or even other way around these shapes coming together that shape
one face. The look of these faces should convey the idea of pieces of cut paper that
created this face. We based the characteristics of these characters on the graphic
design persona of the NWU Graphic Design department, such as beard on the males,
glasses, a funky hair style, complementing color use in fashion.
