"Where it's at"
I spent a couple years of my life overseeing the radio programming and marketing productions for a small college radio station in San Antonio called KRTU 91.7 FM Indie Overnight. When I was growing up, I would always listen to the Jazz and Indie Programming at KRTU as I began the journey towards emo-derivative, post-punk-descended, indie rock/DIY music. As a musician, I found its programming as more of a career consultant than a source of entertainment because it was one of the easiest ways to learn about local bands, see where they play, and get a copy of their albums. At the time I didn't even know what "college-radio" was much less that I could possibly attend the university where the radio was located. Never had I thought that I could actually work there! As soon as I attended Trinity, I became an intern for the overnight programming where I simply inputted the music into the system, but the year after I applied to be manager: and I got it! It was the first management position I acquired outside of music performance or production gigs and I loved the experience of working with promoters, developing community events, as well as designing all of our social media and outreach materials. Here are some events that we put together while I was working there!
In addition to live-air radio in the evenings and events, Indie Overnight created and distributed video productions for local and touring bands. I assisted with the booking and promoting of these music videos as well as hosting interview sessions with the bands and coordinating student volunteers for the production events.
Lastly, I oversaw the music review publications as editor for all of our student interns' reviews and journals. We hosted a blog while I was there and actively engaged members of the community by producing their shows, reviewing festivals, and outsourcing articles from students, faculty, and volunteers from the city!
