Father John Jimenez's profile

Historical Context of the Apparitions at Fatima

Having served as a teacher, chaplain, and parochial vicar in the archdiocese of San Francisco, Father John Jimenez has become known for his articles and sermons pointing out the dangers of the “expanding bubble of desire,” an idea from the work of Rene Girard. Father John Jimenez also highlights messages that counter dehumanization, such as the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima.

In 1917, World War I continued to rage across Europe, with hundreds of thousands of men fighting in the trenches. In Russia, the Bolsheviks were preparing to seize power. In the face of these dangers and the threat of atheism and anarchy, Pope Benedict XV prayed to the Blessed Virgin Mary for help.

On May 13, scarcely a week after the pope's prayer, the Blessed Virgin appeared to three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal, as revolutions tore across the country. She continued to appear to them on the 13th of each month, urging repentance and reparation, concluding in October with the renowned Miracle of the Sun. Although she predicted the end of the war, she also warned of a worse war to follow if people did not repent.
