Repurposing Old Items
This past summer I saw a Facebook friend post a picture of a four drawer dresser that she wanted to sell for $25. It was rough to say the least. But it captured my eye because of its neat yellow color. That warm buttery yellow from days gone by. She had had this dresser in her barn for many years, so it was quite dirty and had a nest of some sort in one of the drawers. So I stop by to take a look and had to have it.
The thing that caught my eye besides the color was the height of the dresser. It is taller than the average dresser that you would find nowadays and much deeper too. So I brought it home, took all the drawers out and gave it a good wash down with the hose and a soft broom. Unfortunately it did lose quite a bit of paint. At first I was a little concerned about the amount of paint it was losing but the finished product had me thinking, wow you truly had no clue how “sparse paint” could make something look so beautiful.
My husband, who I’ve mentioned before has his own ostomy supplies and stoma, was asked to shore up the drawers for me with some brad nails. The dovetail finishes are a tad bit loose so I thought brad nails would be a simple solution to prevent the drawer assemblies from falling apart (not that I intend to store much inside the drawers but just that if I want to use them drawers to store something light I don’t have to worry about them falling apart when they are opened.
When fall arrived, my husband wanted to clean his shop out to make room for vehicles that normally sit outside in the summer months. This meant that the newly refinished dresser needed to find a home. And since my husband did not find time to shore up the drawers with brad nails like I had asked him to, the dresser never made it to the upstairs bedroom where I intended to store it. (But I’m pretty sure he had his own things to deal with around that time of year, like learning how to clean his new ostomy supplies.) Instead it still sits in the foyer of our house, right next to a second cabinet that we also refinished years ago and it actually looks awesome there!
I’ve tried to think of creative ideas that I could use the dresser for if I should decide to keep it in the foyer. It might be neat to store umbrellas, gloves or hats? Possibly photo albums? Maybe candle supplies for my Scentsy burners? Or even a possible home for my 20 pairs of sandals and flip flops? I’m sure the ideas could be endless. I’ll get back to you on want I finally decide on, until then, I wish you happy days refinishing furniture!
