WEAVING ART INTO TRADITIONAL INDIAN TEXTILES: Graduation Project
COLLECTION 1

To develop a range of saris using jacquard and jamdani weaving techniques and incorporating the design elements from Bidriware, a Deccan metal craft.

The first phase of design for the weaves included sketching motifs from the inspiration, Bidri to study the form and stylization of floral and geometric motifs in varying sizes and shapes to arrive on final surfaces in different weaving techniques.

Bidri designs include : Aftabi / Mehtabi (cut out design in metal overlay)
                                    Tehnishan (inlay of sheet metal)
                                    Zarbuland (pattern in high relief)
                                    Tarkashi (inlay of wire).

SYNTHESIS
Repetition, symmetry, proportions and illusion of depth, visually aesthetic with positive and negative balance in composition.
Colour : Black, silver and gold of Bidriware, depicting the luster and dullness through weave structure and yarn material.

Final concepts include the sari layout both in hand-drawn and computer based designs according to the weaving technique, elements for the motifs, design details, color combinations, scale and material to be used for different weaves.
