ORGANiC MiDi CONTROLLER CONCEPT

CAKE IS AN EXPERIMENTAL MIDI CONTROLLER BUILT IN 2012-2013 BY BALINT BENKOE, GRADUATING STUDENT OF MOHOLY-NAGY UNIVERSITY OF ART & DESIGN CO-OPERATING WITH HIS FRIENDS.
IT WAS A MEDIA DESIGN BA PROJECT.
THE MAIN CONCEPT WAS, TO BUILD A NEW MUSICAL INSTRUMENT. BASICALLY EVERY MIDI CONTROLLER IS AN INSTRUMENT, SO WE DECIDED TO BUILD ONE.
OUR INSPIRATION WAS A BUNCH OF GRASS GROWING IN A CUBE SHAPED POT. BALINT USED TO DO EXPERIMENTS WITH JOYSTICK THAT TIME, SO IT WAS QUITE EVIDENT TO USE THOSE AS ANALOG POTMETERS.
THE REST OF THE MATRIX-SHAPED STICKS IS JUST FOR THE EXPERIENCE, TO GET THE FEEL OF SWIPING LIKE GRASS IN A POT.
THE MAIN PROGRAM IS RUNNING ON A SMALL ARDUINO DUEMILANOVE BUILT IN THE CONTROLLER. THE SOFTWARE WE USED IS CALLED PUREDATA-EXTENDED, WHICH TRANSFORMS THE ANALOG SIGNALS FROM THE ARDUINO AND MAKES THEM TO SEND MIDI SIGNALS TO ANY AUDIO SOFTWARE.
