Lucca Walls Illustration

Hello

This is an illustration about the walls of Lucca. I've done it because in these days the walls have been closed to the public due to covid restrictions, and this is a shame for the citizens of this city. Lucca (Tuscany - italy) is an ancient city with ligurian or etruscan origins, later on it's been conquered by Romans and and after them it's been domain of Ostrogoths, Byzantine and Longobards. Republic of Lucca has also been an independet state and part of the French domain during Napoleon's period.

A sign of this rich history is the wall. The actual and more visible ring is from the XVI-XVII centuries and it's 4,5 km long. The wall is one of the 2 examples of intact fortification in Europe from the XVI century. People can walk on it, run, leave it like a city park with elders playing chess or card games and youngsters doing sports and socializing. There are also other 2 smaller rings, the medieval one with intact gates and just part of the walls, and the roman one which is almost invisible now, but rests of the roman period can be found underground in the cellars of villas or older buildings.

The illustration has been done using a photographic reference. Cintiq and Photohop. Have a look
