Stubborn CD player

As a project at Victoria University of Wellington’s School of Design I was tasked with designing a complex digital product that utilizes 3D printing. This CD player is the result.

This CD player has been designed to make one listen to an album from start to finish. It has been made to celebrate the process of listening to music by making it an activity in itself again. With no buttons to control the player, the music simply starts when the lip is placed down and stops (not pauses) when the lid is lifted off.
Its construction has made the most of modern technology. It is built with sectioned parts that have been printed out with a desktop 3D printer and tabs and slots that help hold it together. The whole body has then been electroplated in copper then silver, then passivated to get its final finish.
