Independent vs commercial magazines
Independant:
-Published without financial support of a large corporation or institution
-Usually quite a niche or non mainstream view/audience
-Do not reply on advertising
-Closer size to a zine rather than a normal sized magazine
-Focus on getting direct sales online rather than selling to retailers
Examples of independent magazines:
Commercial magazine:
-Mainstream views with a large audience
-They charge advertisers more money to help offset their costs
-A lot of money will be used in each issue meaning they will usually include well known models/celebrities and usually be printed and bounded at a better quality than independent magazines

Photo story
A photo story is seen as a visual essay with a defined story, it should be constructed from these key elements:
1. A sense of place/establishing shot
2. Portraits and or portraits of key people
3. Relationships between people
4. People doing things
5. Pictures of significant details
Creating my own photo story:
Task: 'You are required to photograph an individual person at work or at leisure in order to generate images that you can edit into a photo story in class.'
I decided to shoot in a hairdressers for my individual at work, I then put the photos into black and white on capture one as this was in the brief. I edited the shoot to get my final photos to then put into indesign
These were the final selected images that were re-sized then placed into the indesign magazine file. This first test shoot showed me to pre visualise an image for each space within the magazine so I will then know wether to shoot landscape and portrait but also were the words will be placed. As I didn't do this it meant I had to use other images which were not the best I could have used.
Single image photo story:
Task: 'You are required to shoot three portraits of different people on location using your own camera and available light. The intention is to prepare for making single image photo story images.'
