The Humane Society's Fight Against Fur Fashion

Jerry Jackintell has owned and led operations at Evergreen Capital in Santa Barbara, California, since founding the real properties and securities investment company in 2002. He previously spent 17 years with Shearson Lehman Brothers, including time as senior vice president. Between 2008 and 2011 he also functioned as vice president of Sima Properties. In addition to his professional activities, Jerry Jackintell is an active philanthropist. He has worked on numerous Special Olympics fundraisers and regularly supports the Humane Society as an animal activist.

The Humane Society is engaged in a number of fights to defend animal rights around the world. One of the organization’s most important fights involves the fur-free initiative. More than 100 million animals are killed every year for their fur, while over 100 individual animals may be killed to make a single piece of clothing.

Furthermore, millions of animals around the world, including foxes, mink, and rabbits, are raised in small cages and grown solely for their fur, which is taken after the animals are gassed or electrocuted. Outside of these facilities, wild animals starve for days in traps before they are claimed for their coats. These traps are indiscriminately violent, maiming a number of non-target animals in the process of collecting animal fur for human clothing.

The Humane Society and its supporters have made significant headway in the fight against the global fur trade. Influential designers, including Gucci and Versace, along with major distributors such as Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s, have enacted fur-free policies. From a legislative perspective, California recently became the first state to ban the manufacturing or sale of animal fur. Similar bans have been put into place in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, as well as other nations, while India placed a ban on all fur imports in 2017.

At www.humanesociety.org, people can learn more about the fur-free movement, including a guide to buying clothes without supporting the fur trade. They can also discover information about supporting the Humane Society in a number of ways.
