VARAL : Board Game


Concept : The Board Game is all about the village 'Varal' and the struggle of villagers on daily basis. Ups and downs that a village face throughout a year has been portrayed in the form of snakes and ladders. The game consist of 4 warli people who compete to win and become the chief of the village, who'll be handed over the big instrument - Tarpa, a traditional musical instrument of Warli tribe. The purpose of this game is to form a source of income for the Warli people, to ease out their hardships and promote tribal art at international level.

ABOUT THE GAME - 
NOMENCLATURE OF THE GAME : 
Warli, is derived from the word - VARAL, meaning a small patch of cultivated land. Hence, the name of Board Game. 

CONSISTS OF : 
1 board(20*20 inches), 4 pawns (shapes resembling the basic form of warli - circle, triangle, square and rectangle), 1 dice (not with numbers written, but the number of lines, as warli is an unwritten language and one can know the number by just counting the lines), 1 instruction manual, 1 small bag for pawns and dice, 1 outer packaging bag. 

MATERIAL USED : 
1. BOARD - Canvas cloth. 
2. PAWNS - White hardening clay. 
3. MANUAL - Thick cartridge sheet. 
4. PACKAGING (2 bags) - Jute cloth bag for both pawns and game packaging. 

COLOUR SCHEME : Maroon & White, resembling the original Warli paintings. 

HOW TO PLAY : 
4 participants play along the game of crossing the 100 steps, facing the ups and down of the village to become the winner by reaching the centre of village, to be handed over as a chief who owns the TARPA, traditional instrument of Warli tribe. 

UPS OF THE VILLAGE - farming, basket making, fishing, family life, forests. 
DOWNS OF THE VILLAGE - snake, wild animals, caves with animals, floods, crop damage. 

STARTING TEXT IN MANUAL : 
4 Warli people settles down in village. 
They start their journey for becoming the Chief; 
Chief? The only one, to whom is the “BIG INSTRUMENT” assigned as authority. 
Let’s see, what does the village greets them with, And who becomes the ultimate Chief amongst the 4. 

ENDING TEXT IN MANUAL : 
It isn’t just 1 giant leap towards the victorious joy of holding the “big instrument” in hand, 
But a tedious struggle of crossing 100 steps, that would make ‘one’ worthy enough to hold “BIG INTRUMENT” with pride and calling himself the Chief.
