Exploring the Hike and Bike Trail in San Antonio

Reid Hackney is a financial services professional who most recently functioned as vice president and CFO of A’GACI in San Antonio, Texas. He holds a degree in accounting from Penn State University. Now retired, Reid Hackney enjoys biking through San Antonio, visiting the missions and urban parks.

San Antonio is known for Missions National Historical Park, a World Heritage Site that includes five missions: the Alamo, Concepcion, San Jose, San Juan, and Espada. Established in the 18th century by Spanish priests, these Catholic missions are walled compounds along the San Antonio River. All five include a church and other buildings where the priests and Native Americans lived.

All five missions are free to visitors and are connected by the paved Hike & Bike Trail. The missions are about two and a half miles apart, and many people choose to bike to all five. The trail is well-maintained and includes bathrooms and water fountains, as well as bike share stations for visitors who don’t have bikes. The trail is not a loop, so bikers and hikers should plan on riding or walking back, or returning via a VIVA bus.
