Pedigree Dogs Exposed
Illustrating the problems faced by modern pedigree dogs
Pencil & watercolour on mount board (+ digital), A1
After watching the BBC documentary Pedigree Dogs Exposed I was suddenly aware of the huge health issues caused by the pedigree dog industry, as it utilises inbreeding and eugenics to create ‘pure’ specimens. Encouraged by competitive dog showing, breeders often fail to address the issues of hereditary diseases that are so widely prevalent in many popular breeds. Here I’ve shown the dichotomy between several breeds as they were originally, and as they are now that aggressive selective breeding has striven to accentuate their most distinguishable features. I am also showing the contrast between the skulls of the dogs’ common ancestor, the wolf, and human-’improved’ deformed modern-day breeds.
