If you forgot about the Porsche front-engined coupes, I’ll remind you that the “forty-fourth” is based on the 924 model, which was developed jointly with VW and had a number of common parts with Audi and VW, for example door handles, buttons etc. Comparing with the rest of company's models made in the 70x-80x it was wrong Porsche by all means: engine in the front, liquid cooling, ... and it was of in-line four configuration!

Simply put, this engine can be called half the V8 from the Porsche 928, although there are many differences in design. The 924-944 was also related with the larger Gran Turismo model (I'm talking about 928) in the location of the transmission in the block with the main transmission at the rear axle (Transaxle). This gave the best weight distribution and handling - the car did not strive to go abruptly when stepping off the gas pedal in a turn (lift-off oversteer - signature feature of the rear-engined 911s).
All in all Porsche made an all-around daily driver, although a typical hatchback of that age had still more place in the back row, but for children and small bags it was just fine (and nobody wrote about 4 places fo grown ups; it's 2 + 2 after all). Needless to say that the platform 924-944-968 was in demand and with numerous improvements during the life cycle it was in production for almost 20years until the mid 90s, when it was replaced by the Boxster / Cayman family.
