Love and Conflict
The relationship between a mother and her adolescent daughter can be incredibly intense, loving and at times conflicted. During adolescence, there is a longing for girls to differentiate themselves from their mothers, while desperately trying to live up to their mothers’ expectation. They tend to want freedom from family and to spend time with friends. They are desperate to grow up and be independent but also have a need to know their mother is still connected, and hasn’t entirely pulled away. This series of portraits sets out to express the intensity of love and the push pull of separation and attachment that is experienced by mothers and daughters during this time.
