Urban Gardens Infographic Mobile App

Urban Gardens is a Mobile Application designed for the topography of gardens found in Woodlands, Singapore.

Introduction to Project
Despite its name Woodlands, there are no woods in the estate; but a myriad of greenery, gardens and parks populate the vicinity of the hub. Notably, there are 14 community gardens cultivated by the government in the Woodlands-Marsiling area. According to NParks, community gardens are communal spaces where different people come together to shape, nurture and sustain a gardening space in their locality.

- Community gardens are spaced evenly and compartmentalised to serve the residents in each area. But, other peculiar and smaller gardens fill the voids observed in several estates. Our definition of a garden refers to collaborative, open-spaced gardens initiated by either the government or developed by the residents themselves. This would include personal gardens made by residents in an open space, either individually or collaboratively. Under our study, we categorised the gardens into three distinct categories: personal, hybrid and community gardens.

- Personal gardens are self-initiated gardens made and sculpted by residents. They are idiosyncratic in nature, and are often found in open spaces directly outside housing units.
Community gardens are government-funded and developed gardens found in housing estates. They often bear signs, fences and a surrounding cordon to signify a community garden. Each gardener or resident is allocated a specific slot or area in that garden.

- Hybrid gardens employ one community garden and numerous personal gardens in one garden. Residents sculpt their own personal gardens around the community garden, giving a sense of diversity and innovativeness.
