The magic of Matte painting in the film industry
Shooting any film and even a small video is a complex and painstaking process. One of the aspects is the right environment. But it is not always possible to go to a distant ocean or find a suitable place in the desert. In some cases, it is simply impossible to get to another planet or to a fantasy world. Not so long ago, decorations were used for this, and it did not always look super realistic (not to reproach the creators). But modern technologies have given more opportunities in this direction. Now Matte painting in the film industry allows you to create real landscapes, whole worlds, send heroes and viewers to any place in the universe (fictional or real).
How does this happen
I was convinced from personal experience how painstaking and scrupulous the work on creating the environment for the film is. The actors themselves are filmed against a green or blue background, they are considered neutral colors. And only after shooting is the environment itself superimposed. And this is a critical and challenging job!
The environment artist paints the very background - the world in which the heroes are. And here it is important to take into account millions of nuances. I work with a variety of tasks, working through the environment, choosing individual elements, composing them at different scales into one realistic picture. After creating a sketch and selection of details, the collage process begins - all elements of the environment must perfectly match each other, creating a unique image. Some elements are finished or painted with a brush.
A fairy tale in reality
Technically, it is extremely difficult, I will not explain the nuances. But besides this, the work is insanely interesting! I am inspired by the work of director Ridley Scott and other aces of the film industry. Still, my favorite destination is fantastic landscapes that can be created from scratch, giving fantasy a wide scale! To create a unique world, transfer the Tower of London to the set, go to the bottom of the Mariinsky Trench or to the other side of the universe - all this is at the mercy of the environment artist.
The success of a film or video largely depends on the atmosphere. Every detail of the environment (the world of heroes) must be thought out to the smallest detail. It can take a huge number of hours to create a single frame in Matte painting for a film, but the process is worth it.
I am sure that the most important thing in the process of developing an environment is not only experience and professionalism, not only the availability of the necessary tools. It's important to love your job. And all these qualities are combined in me. That is why the best task for me is a difficult and ambitious one!
