SPIRALIS
SWIRLING CACTUS

The spiral cereus is a shrubby cactus that forms numerous tall, ascending, columnar stems which branch at the base in a candelabra-like arrangement. They are noted for their characteristic widely spaced ribs.

Some in rare formations called a cristate, or "crested" spiralis . The crest formation, caused by fasciation, creates a seam of abnormal growth along the top or top of the arm,  which causes the stem to swirl.

The inspiration for the warp was the crested cactus or the swirling cactus. Various photos were referred and artworks were made, according to inspiration taken. The form and dimensionality was an important aspect of the explorations.

Explorations were mainly done using folding paper to recreate the texture of the cactus itself. Gradually the explorations were made into more simplified and minimal  versions.
