Final Project

Experiment 3 - Adhering
Alicia Mandujano, 2020, Medium: Glue, tissue paper, glitter glue, and acrylic paint.
Description

For this project I have chosen to use the process of paper mache. My project represents the time and effort put into the decor and creation of consumer bottles. When the product inside runs out, they become waste like every other bottle. This piece conveys the mass production of plastic and waste created for temporary usage. The bottles of mache depict the accumulation of these products. After merging the plastic, string, and wire into the piece, it represents existing, non-biodegradable waste.
Experiment 2 - Sewing
Alicia Mandujano, 2020, 18' x 18', rayon/cotton fabric
Description

For this workshop I chose the words calm and unease to represent my piece. I wanted my work to convey the feeling of an ocean or a body of water. To represent this I ruffled the fabric and sewed it in place to create folds and waves. I also added seashells into some creases. The color white is thought to be pure and clean. This could relate to a person in the way they show themselves to others rather than their personal thoughts.
To counter the feeling of calmness, I added pages of poetry that were slightly burned. The words bring about memories of personal lonely/emptiness. Confronting memories of these difficult experiences may leave the viewer feeling uneasy, similar to water. Water is often associated with calmness and relaxation. It could also insight fear from the vast ocean.
Experiment 1 - Dying
Alicia Mandujano, 2020, 18' x 20', rayon fabric shirt and acrylic paint

Description

For this project I chose to split a shirt in half to represent the words natural and unnatural. The left side piece represents natural. To convey this I used different hues of blue, some green, and a shimmery gold/silver paint. The right side of the shirt is unnatural. Therefore I used red, green, purple, and blue acrylic. I also damaged the fabric by ripping holes. Generally, people do not have dramatic holes in their everyday wear.
